Frequently Asked Questions

Everything important about Murmur, from ghost handles and stars to rooms, reposts, burn posts, and moderation.

What is Murmur?add

Murmur is an anonymous platform where people can share thoughts, confessions, opinions, and beliefs without building a public identity around them. No account, no profile page, no real-name layer.

Do I need to create an account?add

No. Murmur does not require accounts. When you first arrive, the site generates a ghost handle locally on your device so you can participate without signing up.

Is my identity really anonymous?add

Murmur is designed to avoid attaching posts to your real-world identity. It does not ask for your name, email, phone number, or profile, and your ghost handle is generated locally on your device instead of being tied to an account.

What is a Tail?add

A tail is a response to a post. It continues the thought anonymously, like a quiet reply threaded beneath the original murmur.

What is a Star?add

A star means a post resonated with you. It is Murmur’s quiet version of a like, without turning the experience into a performance leaderboard.

What are Echo Rooms?add

Echo Rooms are semi-private spaces where room posts can still surface in the main feed. Anyone with the room code can join, and the room can still be discovered by the wider Murmur community.

What are Sealed Rooms?add

Sealed Rooms are private spaces. Posts stay inside the room and do not appear in the global feed. Only people with the room code can enter and read them.

What are Commons Rooms?add

Commons Rooms are open community spaces organized around a topic or community. Anyone can enter, read, and post there.

What is The Courtyard?add

The Courtyard is the place where rooms live. You can browse rooms, create your own, and jump into Echo or Commons spaces from there.

Can I follow a room?add

Yes, but only for Echo Rooms and Commons Rooms. Sealed Rooms stay private and cannot be followed from the public feed.

What is a Poll?add

A poll is a post with voting options. Voting stays anonymous, and the results are shown without exposing who chose which option.

What is a Burn Post?add

A Burn Post is a post that expires after 24 hours. Once the timer ends, it disappears from the active experience and is no longer available like a regular murmur.

What is a Repost?add

A repost lets you share someone else’s murmur with your own note above it. The original post appears as a nested card inside your repost.

Can I change my theme?add

Yes. When composing a post, you can choose from available card themes such as cherry blossom, antarctica, waterfall, and more. Themes apply to the post you are creating.

What happens when I End Session?add

Ending your session clears the ghost identity, starred items, room history, and other Murmur data stored locally on your device so the next visit starts fresh.

How do I report something harmful?add

Every post and tail includes a flag action. Use it to report harmful content so it can be hidden or reviewed through the platform’s moderation flow.

Who can see my posts?add

Main-feed posts are visible to people visiting Murmur. Echo Room posts can circulate more broadly, Sealed Room posts stay inside their room, and nobody sees a real identity attached to the post.

Does Murmur use AI to read my posts?add

No. Murmur does not use AI to read or classify your posts. Moderation relies on a keyword blocklist and community reporting instead.

Is Murmur free?add

Yes. Murmur is free to use. There is no paid tier required to post, read, star, tail, or move through rooms.

How long do posts stay up?add

Regular posts stay available unless they are moderated or removed from visibility. Burn Posts expire after 24 hours, and room posts disappear from active access when their room expires.

Can I delete my post?add

Yes. You can delete your own post from the My Whispers page by opening the three-dot menu and choosing delete. You can also flag a post when something needs review through moderation.
